Genus Austrofundulus

Order Cyprinodontiformes

Superfamily Cyprinodontoidae

Family Rivulidae

Genus Austrofundulus

South America. Distributed in Colombia, Venezuela, and Guyana. They prefer shaded areas under numerous roots descending into the water. Males can be very aggressive towards each other and females. These are annual fishes that spawn in the substrate: either by diving into peat or by burying eggs into it with fin strokes. Eggs require a period of 2-12 months for development. Hardness 2-8°, pH 6.0-6.5, temperature 23-27°C.

— Austrofundulus leohoignei [Hrbek, Taphorn & Thomerson, 2005]. Code: LEH. Venezuela. 8 cm, females 4-6 cm. Aquarium size of 25 liters per pair of fish. It is better to keep the fish not in community tanks, but in small species aquariums. These should be shaded water bodies with soft, dark substrate. Floating plants are very good. Fishes can jump out of the aquarium, so it must be covered with a glass lid on top. Abundant feeding and regular water changes contribute to rapid growth and prompt spawning. They feed on live and frozen food. Lifespan up to 2 years. T 23-25°C.

— Austrofundulus limnaeus [Schultz, 1949]. Code: LIM. Synonyms: Austrofundulus myersi, stagnalis; Rachovia limnaeus. Venezuela, Colombia, and Guyana. 6-9 cm, female 4-7 cm. Suitable for keeping in a mixed aquarium without small fish, with a dark sandy substrate and driftwood for shelter. In cramped aquariums, males can become aggressive toward each other. Areas of dense vegetation provide refuges for females not ready for spawning, which males occasionally chase fiercely and sometimes even injure. Substrate made of peat crumbs and fine dark sand. Effective filtration, periodic partial water changes with fresh water. T 24-27°C.

— Austrofundulus transilis [Myers, 1932]. Code: TRS. (English – Orinoco Spotfin Killie, Venezuelan Killifish). Venezuela, Orinoco River, northern part of Guyana. Seasonal species. 6-9 cm, female smaller. Yellow-green with a pattern of burgundy dots and dashes. Body flanks have a blue sheen, unpaired fins with a black border. Tail is green with a wide orange and burgundy margin along the edge. Female is brown with dark red dots on the body and fins. Males are very aggressive; it is better to keep them in a separate aquarium. Large aquariums with soft water and free swimming space are required. Fishes prefer bottom water layers. Lighting should be moderate. Unpretentious, they fall ill relatively rarely in the aquarium. Breeding is difficult. Spawn in a peat substrate 4-5 cm deep. For young fish to grow quickly, they need to be fed abundantly with appropriately sized live food. T 22-24°C.
