To be continued…
— Orconectes macrus [Williams, 1952] — Neosho Midget crayfish. “Neosho Midget crayfish”. USA, Oklahoma and Kansas, Neosho River. 3-5 cm in length. These are small crayfish, the main brown tone is not uniform, but applied to the crayfish’s body with strokes and specks, a clear black stripe crosses the joints of the animal’s abdomen and its carapace. The body is thick, claws are wide and powerful. It lives in short burrows.
The small size of the dwarf crayfish and its peaceful nature allow them to be kept with almost large species of shrimp. A large layer of substrate is required, preferably sandy, fine-grained, and not heavily planted with ground-cover plants, or with designated sandy areas so that the crayfish can freely dig burrows for themselves, as they rarely choose ready-made means for shelters.
A filter and aerator must be present, as this species is very sensitive to oxygen content in the water. A 30% water change can be made every 10-14 days. This species of crayfish may be indifferent to raw vegetables, as such food is not typical for their natural habitat. Temperature from 20 to 25°C, dH about 10°, pH 6.5-7.8.
— Orconectes palmeri [Faxon, 1884] — Grey Speckled crayfish. “Grey Speckled crayfish”. USA, Missouri. 4-6 cm. These crayfish are gray with numerous greenish-black specks and spots on the claws, carapace, and abdomen. Two large blue-violet spots are located near the back of the head, and another pair colors near the joint of the carapace and abdomen. The orange fingers of the claws often have noticeable creamy-yellow stripes. There is a subspecies — Orconectes palmeri longimanus, in which the tips of the claws may have a bright orange color.
By nature, they are not very friendly, so they should not be kept with shrimp and crayfish, and it is also better to avoid neighborhood with small bottom-dwelling fish in the same aquarium, since the crayfish prefers animal food, and moreover, it will not refuse to feast on crustacean relatives during molting, even those exceeding its own dimensions.
It is completely indifferent to aquarium plants, therefore, for a balanced diet, in addition to the protein diet usual for it, plant food must be given. It is better to use sandy-gravel substrate, crayfish sometimes dig burrows if they do not find a suitable shelter. Water temperature 22-24°C, at a mark below 22 degrees crayfish hibernate. dH 10°; pH 6.5-7.8.
— Orconectes peruncus [Creaser, 1931] — Big Creek crayfish. “Big Creek crayfish”, “Spothanded crayfish”. 5-8 cm. Brown crayfish without bright colors. The even brown coloration of the entire body is covered with dark gray or black dots, some individuals with black spots randomly scattered over the surface of the back and claws, with numerous dots on the abdomen are found. Claws are moderately wide.
Very inquisitive, they are constantly in motion. A stony-gravel substrate is desirable, with a large number of grottoes, stones, rocks, and snags. Lives in burrows, digging them in gravel below rocks. Simple and unpretentious in care, they prefer a plant-based menu in nutrition. Water temperature 24°C, pH 7.5, unpretentious to water hardness.
Orconectes punctimanus, quadruncus, williamsi.
