Type — Arthropoda.
Subtype — Crustacea.
Class — Malacostraca.
Order — Decapoda.
Superfamily — Atyoidea
Family — Atyidae.
Genus Neocaridina — Neocaridina.
— Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis [Cai, 1996]. “Snow Ball White shrimp”, “Weißei garnele”. South China, Hunan and Guangdong provinces. 2.5-3 cm. Wild specimens have a brownish-gray coloration. The coloration is very variable, with different shades of color. Females have a grayish coloration, which can vary in intensity from very light gray to brownish gray.
Males are also gray, but usually to a lesser extent than females. Some also have a light stripe on the back. Characteristic black eyes. Females are larger. The egg cluster has a very glowing white coloration, similar to white pearls. Several color morphs have been bred from it.
Easily adaptable to different conditions. Shrimp can live in water from soft and slightly acidic (pH 6.6-7.0) to very hard and alkaline (pH 7.0-8.4). The most suitable conditions for breeding this shrimp species are soft to medium-hard water. Reproduction occurs approximately once every two months. Egg incubation under the female’s abdomen lasts 3-4 weeks in fresh water.
Baby shrimp after birth are miniature versions of adults. A generation grows in about 3-5 months, depending on temperature. Neocaridina zhangjiajiensis and its colored morphs are very hardy and prolific compared to the Red Cherry shrimp. They live up to 20 months. dH 6-16°; T 20-28°C.
— Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) var. Rili — Rili Shrimp. “Rili Shrimp”, “Kohaku Shrimp”. Synonym: Neocaridina heteropoda. Taiwan. Males 2 cm, females 2.5 cm. This is a subspecies of Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) shrimp in whose transparent-colored coloration the transparent part predominates. The central part is depigmented and therefore transparent, only the cephalothorax and tail are dark red. The saddle and eggs are yellow. There are many color forms – red, orange, and yellow. Young females only 10 mm long can already be distinguished from males by the slowly forming neck spot – evidence of ovary formation.
There is another variety called — Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) “Kanoko Shrimp”. A characteristic feature of this subspecies is an interesting coloration: saturated red with black spots and stripes. The eggs of Kanoko shrimp are black. — Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) “Blue Velvet Shrimp” – were bred from Red Rili shrimp. They look similar to Blue Pearl shrimp;
— Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) “Blue Rili” – Similar in coloration to Rili Shrimp, but with blue color. There are specimens that have no red color at all. Individual body parts are colorless. Eggs are green; — Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) “Orange Rili” – body parts are orange with colorless areas; — Neocaridina davidi (heteropoda) “Yellow Rili” – Similar in coloration to Rili Shrimp, but with yellow spots instead of red.
Identification: David’s Rili Shrimp — Neocaridina davidi Rili.
Grading is carried out based on the ratio of colored and transparent parts. The larger the area of the transparent part, the higher the grade of the shrimp. All efforts are directed towards obtaining shrimp with a transparent abdomen, free of colored spots or dots, and a colored cephalothorax.
Another goal in the development of Rili shrimp is to obtain specimens with a characteristic pattern on the body, for example, with round spots on the sides. The substrate should be as dark as possible or at least covered with brown almond leaves – this will emphasize the intense beauty of the animals. T 18-28°C; pH 6.5-7.5.
Identification: Rili Shrimp — Neocaridina davidi Rili.
