Genus Corydoras.
— Long Nosed Fairy Catfish — Corydoras sychri [Weitzman, 1960]. Peru. 5 cm. Bright silver-white body coloration with a black stripe across the eye. A few dark spots adorn the upper part of the body and fins. Very peaceful. pH 6.5-7.2; T 22-25°C.
— Three Lined Cory — Corydoras trilineatus [Cope, 1872]. Synonyms: Corydoras episcope, dubius. (Eng. False Julii Cory, Three Lined Cory, Threestripe Corydoras). Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Ampiyacu, Rio Napo, Rio Ucayali, and Rio Morana rivers. 5-6 cm. Coloration is yellowish-gray with a metallic greenish sheen. The body features a pattern consisting of dark wavy lines, creating a net-like shape. A narrow, wavy black stripe runs from the tail towards the head, reaching almost to the gill cover in males, and interrupted in the middle of the body in females, with two light stripes running above and below the black stripe.
The head has a reticulated pattern of wavy lines. Various patterns on the body depend on the fish’s origin. The belly is light, unpatterned. There is a black spot in the upper part of the dorsal fin, and 5-7 dashed stripes run vertically along the anal fin. The caudal fin has five thin vertical stripes formed by dots. Males are significantly slimmer than females, which have quite rounded shapes at an early age. Very similar to Corydoras julii, in which the spots on the head are much sparser.
A peaceful, sociable species that requires a substrate of soft, rounded sand so it can burrow. Aquarium with rich vegetation and minimal water movement. Prefer dim lighting, clean, not too old water. In community aquariums, it is best to keep more males than females, resulting in breeding groups of 2-3 males to 1 female. They like to stay in areas with subdued light. Omnivorous species, fed with any bottom aquarium foods. Mature at 12 months. Live up to 5 years. dH 3-20°; pH 6.8-7.8; T 22-27°С.
Identification: Three Lined Cory — Corydoras trilineatus.
— Wavy Cory — Corydoras undulatus [Regan, 1912]. Argentina, Brazil. 5 cm. Body dense and shortened, back convex, belly straight. Mouth inferior, well adapted for gathering food from the bottom and digging for worms. On the upper lip, there are two pairs of barbels, allowing good orientation in murky water. The body is glossy golden with many black dashes and spots, and has an almost black coloration with 3-5 longitudinal rows of yellowish-white dots. The dorsal fin is high. The dorsal fin has dots, sometimes merging into two or three horizontal stripes. The remaining fins are yellowish, transparent. Males are slimmer and more contrasting than females.
A peaceful and schooling fish. This species of catfish is easy to keep, but very difficult to breed. A species undemanding of keeping conditions. Becomes active at dusk. Gets along with various species of fish, even the smallest ones. It is advisable to keep them in a school of at least 6 fish. Aquarium with dense thickets of live floating or broad-leaved plants (planted along the side and back walls) and various shelters. Two rows of bony plates run along the entire body, providing reliable protection against predators, but making it slightly clumsy.
It happens that having swum into a narrow crevice, the catfish cannot swim out and dies, so it is very important to consider this feature when setting up the aquarium. Inhabit the lower layers of water. Prefers subdued lighting and a thick layer of substrate made of gravel or coarse sand, in which it willingly burrows in search of food. Consumes dry, live (tubifex, bloodworms, glassworms) and vegetable food. Mature at 12 months. The wavy cory is bred only using hormone injections. Lifespan up to 8 years. dH up to 20°; pH 6.0-7.5; T 20-24°С.
— Banded Cory — Corydoras zygatus [Eigenmann & Allen, 1924]. Originating from the Huallaga River near Tingo Maria in Peru, often confused with C. rabauti. 6-7 cm. C. zygatus is colored more modestly, background color is pinkish-gray. A dark stripe runs from the nape to the tail, which always has a green tint. The head is copper-bronze. Fins are colorless or slightly brownish. An albino form exists. Rarely active during the day and very shy. T 22-27°С.
