— Brilliant Rasbora — Rasbora einthovenii [Bleeker, 1851]. Synonym: Rasbora labuana, vegae. (Eng. Brilliant Rasbora, Long Band Rasbora). Singapore, Thailand, Borneo. 8 cm. Similar in body shape and coloration to R. taeniata and R. daniconius, from which it differs by a stouter body build and back coloration intensity ranging from greenish-yellow-brown to light olive. A blue-black stripe runs from the mouth to the end of the caudal fin. Depending on lighting, the body of this fish may acquire a purple tint. Males are smaller and slimmer than females.
Suitable for a community aquarium, taking into account its size. Compatible with large closely related species. Shoaling, active. These fish are exceptionally peaceful and form large shoals, often jumping through the smallest gaps; the aquarium should be covered very tightly with a glass lid. They prefer the middle and upper water layers. Sparse vegetation along the side and back walls, plenty of swimming space, and hiding spots. They do not touch plants. pH 6.0-6.5; dH 2-8°; T 22-26°C.
— Elegant Rasbora, Two Spot Rasbora, Yellow Rasbora — Rasbora elegans [Volz, 1903]. (Eng. Elegant Rasbora, Two Spot Rasbora). Malacca Peninsula, Borneo, Sumatra, Malaysia. One of the largest rasbora species – in natural conditions, the length can reach 20 cm. In an aquarium, it is usually no more than 12 cm. At a young age, these fish can be confused with R. kalochroma, which are half as small as adults and acquire a beautiful pinkish-brown coloration of the entire body with age.
The elegant rasbora has three blue-black spots on its flanks, which shimmer with purple mother-of-pearl: one in the middle of the body, the second, smaller and with a golden border, at the base of the caudal fin, and one at the base of the anal fin. A dark stripe runs along the base of道の the anal fin. The male’s anal fin is yellow. Males are smaller with brighter coloration. Depending on the capture location, several subspecies are known: — R. elegans nematotaenia; — R. elegans bunguranensis; — R. elegans spiloraenia.
Elongated aquarium, partially densely planted. They are peaceful, and should be kept in a shoal of 5 or more individuals, avoiding aggressive and annoying tank mates. It is advisable to keep them with fish of similar size. Hiding places made of aquatic plants or driftwood are important. Fish imported from Singapore require prolonged quarantine as they carry many infections. Fry are large and easy to raise. pH 6.0-7.0; dH 4-10°; T 23-26°C.
— Clown Rasbora, Iridescent Rasbora — Rasbora kalochroma [Bleeker, 1851]. (Eng. Bigspot Rasbora, Clown Rasbora, Iridescent Rasbora, Redember Rasbora). Malacca Peninsula, Sumatra, Borneo. 10 cm, in the aquarium does not exceed 5 cm. The body is elongated, slender. The back is brownish-red with a greenish sheen, the flank is reddish, the belly ranges from pink to yellowish-white. A shiny light-green stripe runs from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin.
There is a black spot on the flank in the front and rear parts of the body, which are sometimes connected by an indistinct dark stripe, often in the form of dots. Fins are blood-red, the tip of the anal fin is black. The caudal fin is forked. The male is smaller and slimmer than the female. The female is fuller, and the anal fin is less intensely colored.
Peaceful, active in the middle water layer, can be kept with other peaceful fish. The aquarium can be either species-specific or community, with dense plant thickets, including floating plants, and open swimming space. They stay in groups, mostly in the middle water layer. These fish should only be kept in a large shoal of 10-12 fish, in a densely planted, oblong aquarium with plenty of swimming space. Otherwise, the fish do not feel very well, become more sluggish, and their coloration fades.
The fish are very jumpy, so to prevent them from jumping out of the aquarium, it must be covered with a lid. Fine dark-colored gravel is best used as a substrate. Partial shading with floating plants is recommended. Water must be very soft and acidic. Filtration and aeration are necessary. Partial water changes are very important. For the fish’s well-being, aquarium water should be filtered through peat.
Accepts live food and substitutes. Preference should be given to foods that can stay on the water surface for a relatively long time. Not a fish for beginners, difficult to keep. Very delicate and sensitive. Reaches sexual maturity at 10-12 months of age. The female spawns eggs on the underside of plant leaves. Lifespan is about 5 years. pH 5.5-6.8; dH 2-12°; T 24-28°C.
— Red Cherry Rasbora — Rasbora lacrimula [Hadiaty & Kottelat, 2009]. (Eng. Red Cherry Rasbora, Bornean Redfin Rasbora, Sunshine Rasbora, Dwarf Volcano Rasbora). Kalimantan, Eastern Borneo, Indonesia, in slow-flowing waters. Males up to 3 cm, females up to 3 cm. Pale brown body with a blue-green iridescent tint, especially in the upper body.
Some individuals have a dark reticulated pattern above the middle part of the body. Small tubercles on the dorsal surface. A dark stripe runs along the middle of the body and ends in a relatively large, horizontally positioned, teardrop-shaped spot on the caudal peduncle. Small tubercles can be seen on the upper part of the caudal peduncle. Unpaired fins show varying amounts of orange color. Adult males are noticeably slimmer and more intensely colored than females.
Peaceful fish, can be kept in an aquarium with other peaceful, similarly sized fish in a shoal of 8 or more individuals. They display better coloration when kept in a densely planted aquarium along the edges, with a dark substrate featuring roots and branches. Floating plants are desirable to diffuse lighting. Does not impose special requirements regarding water chemistry. Water must be free of organic pollutants. Filtration flow should not be strong. They feed on live, frozen, and dry foods. pH 5.5-7.5; dH 2-12°; T 25-29°C.
— Meinken’s Rasbora — Rasbora meinkeni [Beaufort, 1931]. Sumatra. 4 cm. It has a yellowish body, a green stripe runs from the gill cover to the base of the caudal fin, and a short dark line at the base of the anal fin. Females differ from males only by a more rounded body shape. Unpretentious, shoaling, peaceful fish, suitable for a community aquarium. Keeps mainly in the upper and middle water layers. Dark substrate and abundant vegetation in the background, filtration, and regular fresh water changes are desirable. T 24-27°C; dH up to 13°; pH 5.5-7.0.
