Genus Girardinichthys

Girardinichthys multiradiatus

— Girardinichthys multiradiatus [Meek, 1904]. Synonym: Girardinichthys innominatus, limnurgus, Lermichthys multiradiatus. (Eng. Darkedged Splitfin). California and Mexico, Lerma River. Male 4, female 5 cm. Peaceful. Males rarely display and have a very low level of internal aggressiveness, can be kept in a community aquarium. Vegetable supplements and weekly water changes are necessary. They require adequate oxygen supply and water circulation.

Low water temperature is very important for keeping them; at temperatures above 22°C they struggle to survive and their lifespan is shortened. They are fed flakes, frozen and live foods, with additional vegetable matter, and algae should also be present in the aquarium as an additional food source. After a gestation of 7-8 weeks, up to 15 fry are born, which grow quickly. dH 9-15°; pH 6.0-7.5; T 17-20°C.

Girardinichthys viviparus

— Girardinichthys viviparus [Bustamante, 1837]. Synonym: Cyprinus viviparus. (Eng. Chapultepec Splitfin). Mexico. Male up to 5, female up to 6 cm. The short body shape of males with large dorsal and anal fins colored black, along with black coloration that occasionally covers the entire body, makes this little fish quite beautiful. Females are longer and have a light olive color. Faint shimmering vertical stripes may sometimes appear on their bodies. Males rarely display and have very low internal aggressiveness, defeated fish are not chased.

Peaceful, can be kept in a community aquarium with vegetation and hiding places. Do not damage plants. Low water temperature is very important for keeping them; at temperatures above 22°C they struggle to survive and their lifespan is shortened. In addition, the coloration of males fades, the appetite of all fish decreases, and young fish do not develop optimally at high temperatures. Can be kept in an outdoor garden pond. The female gives birth to 20 fry about 12 mm long. T 18-22°C.

Genus Goodea

Goodea atripinnis

— Goodea atripinnis [Jordan, 1880]. Synonym: Characodon atripinnis. (Eng. Blackfin Goodea). Central Mexico, Punoko River. Males 10 cm, females 16 cm, slightly smaller in the aquarium. Body round, oblong, covered with small scales, mouth small. The dominant male has a very intense color. His body is brown with a metallic green sheen, and a dark brown line runs along the body. The fins of juveniles are transparent, darkening with age to become black, the body is gray-silver with small dark spots. Males are smaller than females and have dark fins.

Peaceful, very active, can be kept in a community aquarium. Should always be kept in groups. Minor disputes and fights sometimes occur between adult females or between males. The dominant male is aggressive and poses a danger to conspecifics in a small volume. Vegetation and hiding places for females and juveniles are needed. They tolerate temperatures above 22°C poorly; males fade and lifespan is significantly reduced. Prolonged water temperatures above 22°C lead to tuberculosis. Water must be alkaline in all cases. Diet consists mainly of vegetable food (spirulina, algae, scalded lettuce). After a gestation of 6-8 weeks, up to 40 fry measuring 12-15 mm appear. pH 7-8; dH 5-25°; T 18-22°С.

Genus Xenoophorus

Xenoophorus captivus

— Xenoophorus captivus [Hubbs, 1924]. Synonym: Goodea captiva, Xenoophorus erro, exsul. (Eng. Relict Splitfin). Mexico. 5-6 cm. Males have iridescent green coloration on the sides and a cream border on the transparent caudal fin. Males have a broad back and an elongated dorsal fin.

Fish are peaceful and can be kept in a community aquarium; minor skirmishes between males do not result in injury. Males form a hierarchy, although not very prominent. These fish are very demanding regarding water quality and do not tolerate a drop in acidity. They can withstand temperatures of 24-26°C for short periods. They are fed flakes, frozen and live food, with additional vegetable matter. After 8 weeks, the female gives birth to about 15 fry 10-15 mm long. dH 10-25°; pH 7-8; T 18-24°C.

Xenotaenia resolanae, Zoogoneticus quitzeoensis, Zoogoneticus tequila.
