Genus Trichopodus, Gourami — Trichopodus.
— Snakeskin Gourami — Trichopodus pectoralis [Regan, 1910]. Synonym: Trichogaster pectoralis. Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Malay Archipelago, Mekong and Chao Phraya river basins. The largest representative of the genus Trichogaster, 25 cm, in the aquarium up to 15 cm. It has a more elongated body than other gouramis, the rear part of the body is usually slightly curved upwards. The main background is greenish-brown, back is olive, flanks are greenish-gray with a silver iridescence.
A black group of spots, forming an interrupted dark horizontal line, extends from the snout, through the eye, to the caudal base. In the rear part of the body on the flanks, there are several slightly slanted dark stripes, the contrast of which increases towards the caudal fin. During spawning, these vague stripes appear clearly. The lower parts of the body are white. The fins are gray-green.
Males have elongated dorsal and anal fins, pelvic fins are long and filamentous, orange or red. The anal fin is amber-colored. Females are fuller, fins are yellow. Fry have a monochromatic silvery-greenish coloration with a bluish sheen.
Despite its relatively large size, this is a peaceful, very timid labyrinth fish that can be kept in a community aquarium with peaceful, commensurately sized fish. For keeping fish while they are young, relatively small aquariums are sufficient. As they grow, larger aquariums will be needed. Keeping a single pair of fish requires an aquarium of 100 liters or more. Males are relatively non-aggressive even during the breeding season.
Needs a suitably spacious aquarium with plenty of floating plants and hiding places. Tall-growing plants on the sides and in the back, along with floating plants, form the necessary shelters. They do not like bright lighting. Females are often ruthlessly chased and therefore need hiding places. Fish may jump out of the aquarium. Eats any dry, live, and frozen foods. They may nibble on the insulation of electrical wires of a heater or filter.
Males build bubble nests among floating plants, up to 25 cm in diameter. During reproduction, they can produce croaking or growling sounds. Fry grow very slowly and are sensitive to water temperature changes during the first 3 months. Lifespan in the aquarium up to 6 years. pH 6.5-8.3; dH 2-15°; T 23-28°C.
Subfamily Macropodusinae, Malpulutta kretseri.
