Genus Profundulus — Profundulus. Prof.
— Profundulus punctatus [Gunlher, 1866] — Oaxaca Killifish. Synonyms: Profundulus balsanus, scapularius, gertrudeae; Fundulus punctatus, pachycephalus, parvipinnis. From southern Mexico to southern Guatemala. 10 cm. Males are brownish-yellow with a longitudinal purple-violet stripe and dark spots in the lower half of the body. During the spawning period, they turn yellow-orange. Females are olive-gray. Aquarium should be spacious, densely planted with vegetation, equipped with aeration and filtration. Fry can live together with their parents. Lifespan up to 6 years. dH 8-20°, pH above 7, T 20-27°C.
Family Valenciidae
Genus Valencia – Valencia. Val.
This is a new family, resulting from the 1981 revision, which includes only one genus – Valencia with two species. Both became known through separate publications. They inhabit the Mediterranean region. As aquarium fish, they have not become established.
— Valencia hispanica [Valenciennes, 1846] — Valencia Toothcarp. Code: HIS. This species originates from Southeastern Spain, Valencia, Seville. They inhabit shallow, stagnant, and slow-flowing brackish coastal wetlands. Stocky, strong, laterally compressed body with a flattened top of the head and occipital region. Small mouth slit directed obliquely upwards. Jaws are equipped with sharp teeth arranged in several rows. There are six natural populations in Valencia. Male 6 cm, female 8 cm. They exhibit strong sexual dimorphism.
The male has a brown back, greenish sides with a metallic sheen and narrow transverse stripes, yellowish-white belly. Directly above the pectoral fins, behind the gill cover, there are large black spots; on the lower part of the body, there are about a dozen dark vertical stripes. Dorsal, caudal, and anal fins are reddish-yellow with a dark border. Females range from light yellow to whitish with a blurred lead-gray longitudinal stripe from the gill cover to the caudal fin. Aquarium should be spacious, species-specific. They mature at 6-7 months. Temperature 15-30°C.
