Type — Arthropoda.
Subtype — Crustacea.
Class — Malacostraca.
Order — Decapoda.
Superfamily — Atyoidea
Family — Atyidae.
Genus Caridina — Caridina.
— Caridina loehae [Woltereck, 1937] — Orange Delight Shrimp, Three Spot Red Shrimp. “Orange Delight shrimp”, “Red (Blue) Powder Bee shrimp”, “Red Powder shrimp”, “Three Spot Red shrimp”, “Orange Matano shrimp”, “Mini Blue Bee shrimp”, “Mini (Slender) Bee shrimp”. Indonesia, Sulawesi, inhabits Lake Matano and the Petea River, also found at the outlet of Lake Towuti. Small shrimp size, 0.75-1.2 cm.
Orange-red, from light red to dark red, with 2-3 white stripes on the back and small white specks all over the body. These stripes are distinctive for the species. In addition, the entire body is covered with small white specks. The eggs are red. Sometimes the coloration of the shrimp may change, turning from orange to brown. A change in the shrimp’s coloration towards darkening (turning brown) should be regarded as stress or unsatisfactory keeping conditions. Under stress, the red color may change to blue. There are other Sulawesi varieties with similar body coloration.
Non-aggressive. Unlike many other shrimps, they do not lead a secretive lifestyle and are completely unafraid of people approaching the aquarium. Not picky about food. You can feed them the same things you feed your other shrimp. Non-aggressive. This species is not for beginners. It is recommended to keep this species in hard water with a pH of at least 7.0; it is recommended to use coral sand and sandy substrate to naturally increase water hardness.
If your pets do not like something about their living conditions, they will instantly signal this by changing their color from reddish-orange to brown or blue. Reproduction in freshwater, but very difficult. Determining the sex of the shrimp is practically impossible. The female carries 10-15 eggs for 20-30 days. The eggs are red. The babies begin to color in parental colors no earlier than one week of age. They are not recommended for novice aquarists. pH 7.0-8.5; T 26-29°C.
— Caridina longidigita [Cai & Wowor, 2007] — Long-fingered Shrimp. Sulawesi, Indonesia. The species is widespread in Lake Poso (except for rivers). It inhabits gravel in the coastal zone (up to 3 m depth) and large rocks (deeper than 3 m). It has long brushes on its limbs, which determines the special feeding method of these shrimps. Coloration ranges from transparent-brownish to greenish, with numerous spots covering the entire body. The brushes of the claws are orange. The eggs are dark brown. The species is similar to C. sarasinorum, but can be easily distinguished by its characteristic brushes.
— Caridina mahalona [Cai, Wowor & Choy, 2009]. Sulawesi, Indonesia. The species is found mainly in rivers flowing into the lakes of the Malili system, as well as north of Lake Matano (Tomori district, outside the Malili system). Thus, this is the only non-endemic species in the Malili system. This species is exclusively riverine and inhabits various substrates (fallen leaves, river plants, roots, dead wood). Near Lake Matano, it is sometimes found together with C. holthuisi, but never with other species, even riverine ones (C. masapi). The coloration does not have any specific pattern. The body is transparent-yellowish or brownish, similar to C. masapi, C. acutirostris, C. schenkeli.
— Caridina masapi [Woltereck, 1937] — Red Spotted Bee Shrimp, Coco Bee Shrimp, Electric Shrimps. “Towuti Tiger shrimp”, “Red Spotted Bee shrimp”, “Coco Bee shrimp”, “Bicolor shrimp”, “Matano shrimp”, “Sunghai Electric shrimp”, “Six Banded Blue Bee shrimp”. Sulawesi, Indonesia. Size 2-3 cm. The species is widespread in the lakes and rivers of the Malili system. But at the same time, only single specimens have been found in Lake Matano, and no specimens have been found directly in Lake Mahalona. Also, this is the only species inhabiting Lakes Masapi and Lontoa. Like C. lanceolata, this species inhabits diverse, often mixed, but mainly soft substrates (such as plants and fallen leaves).
Coloration ranges from yellowish or brownish to transparent, often with transverse dark or light stripes, but without any permanent pattern. This species is smaller in size and genetically unrelated to C. mahalona, with which it does not co-occur.
— Caridina parvula [Rintelen & Cai, 2009] — Mini Blue Bee Shrimp. “Mini (Slender) Blue Bee shrimp”, “Slender Blue shrimp”. Sulawesi, Indonesia. Size about 1 (0.75-1.2) cm. The species is widespread in Lakes Matano and Towuti, with individual specimens found in the Petea and Tominanga rivers. This small shrimp often lives together with other small species, for example, C. loehae, on small stones in the coastal zone.
Light red coloration, which completely changes to blue under stress, with faint transverse white stripes. The eggs are the same color as the shrimp. It differs from C. loehae by a shorter rostrum and less noticeable white markings.
Identification: Genus Caridina — Caridina loehae, longidigita, masapi.
Caridina pareparensis, profundicola, sarasinorum, spinata.
