Mini Aquarium

Mini Aquarium.

Quite often we face a dilemma – “if you shouldn’t, but really want to…”. What can you do, our apartment sizes are not rubber and are so far from ideal! But we shouldn’t bury our dream of an aquarium… Now, a gorgeous underwater world with various plants and livestock can be recreated in miniature. The first rule to follow when deciding to buy a “small” aquarium is to borrow someone’s sense of proportion and the ability to listen to someone who understands fishkeeping better than you do. Before going to the store, flip through a book or look at what kind of fish are offered. Write down their names so you don’t have to explain to “that guy” later what kind of beast you want to bring back to him.

A capacity from 1 to 20 liters can be considered “small”. These include all kinds of glasses, vases, small aquariums made of glass, crystal, ceramics, or plastic. In “nano” tanks, practically all the same devices are used as in large aquariums, only the gadgets are scaled down significantly. There are also small magnetic scrapers smaller than a matchbox, tiny nets for nano-fish, and even mini-siphons.

Care. Mini aquariums always have maxi problems. One can only dream of establishing a stable biological process. Cleaning and caring for such aquariums is terribly difficult, so it’s best to have special conditioner products on hand that help maintain long-term biological balance in the aquarium. Try to place the aquarium in a safe place (since it is easily tipped over) and where there are no drafts to avoid sudden cooling on one side of the aquarium.

The substrate layer thickness in such aquariums is about 2-3 centimeters. You should use only fine substrates, which not only look better in such aquariums but are also much easier to work with when planting small plants with delicate root systems. To decorate small aquariums, decorative stones or miniature driftwood are also used. The light fixture above the aquarium is not a heating device. The water temperature in such aquariums fluctuates as it pleases, so just choose the warmest place in the apartment and try to keep it controlled within 22-25 degrees.

Fish. The number of fish should not exceed the water volume, and the selection in our stores is so large that it will be almost impossible to resist buying just one fish. Try to buy a fish that (judging at least from written sources) will not grow large. At the slightest sign of distress in the fish – constantly gasping for air from the water surface, sluggishness, flared purple gills and scales, constant darting, jumping out of the aquarium – do not move it to another container, but simply install an air pump and check the water parameters and temperature. Guppies, platys, labyrinth fish (bettas, paradise fish), Corydoras catfish based on 1-2 liters per fish are best suited for such purposes.

Feeding. Since the fish are small and their movements are limited, they must be fed very carefully. Divide the daily amount of food into small portions – it is better to feed many times in small amounts than once in a large amount.
