Back ranges from reddish-brown to orange-red, transitioning towards the belly into yellow to greenish, with the lower belly being black. Aggressiveness is reduced by rainbowfish swimming in the upper water layers. Water ranges from neutral to hard, with weekly water changes of up to 40%. Feed on a variety of foods such as diatoms and filamentous algae, detritus, insect larvae, bloodworms, flakes.
