Subclass Bryidae, true mosses ( Bryidae )
Order Hypnales ( Hypnales )
Family Hypnaceae ( Hypnaceae )
Genus Vesicularia — Vesicularia.
Erect Moss — Vesicularia reticulata. “Erect Moss”.
Moss classification is based on such features as appearance, presence of a costa (vein) in the leaves, papillae on cell walls, leaf margin characteristics, cell differentiation at the leaf base, stem shape (cylindrical or flattened), branching pattern, and the presence of leaf rhizoids and spore capsules. More than half of them cannot be identified without a microscope, comparison photographs, and a certain background knowledge. In addition, the appearance of mosses is quite variable depending on maintenance conditions. Aquarium mosses, like many other aquarium plants, change their shape, branching pattern, and leaf shape when grown submerged. Therefore, it is best to use features subject to the least amount of change for accurate species identification. Many commercial trade names of mosses still do not have a Latin species name.
Taxiphyllum alternans, Taxiphyllum barbieri, Flame Moss, Spiky Moss, Peacock Moss.
