Moss classification is based on such features as appearance, presence of a costa (vein) in the leaves, papillae on cell walls, leaf margin characteristics, cell differentiation at the leaf base, stem shape (cylindrical or flattened), stem branching patterns, and the presence of leaf rhizoids and spore capsules. More than half of them cannot be identified without a microscope, comparison photographs, and a certain background knowledge. In addition, the appearance of mosses is quite variable depending on keeping conditions. Aquarium mosses, like many other aquarium plants, change their shape, branching pattern, and leaf shape when grown submersed. Therefore, it is best if we begin using features subject to the least variation for accurate species identification. Many commercial trade names of mosses still do not have a Latin species name.

Monosolenium tenerum, Pellia.

Taxiphyllum alternans Taiwan Moss, Taxiphyllum barbieri Java Moss.
